Top Tips for Keeping Your Siding in Perfect Condition

Vinyl siding affected by plants

Trim nearby trees and vegetation: Trees and vegetation can rub against your siding and cause damage over time. Trim any trees or vegetation that are growing near your siding to prevent this from happening. It applies especially with wood siding which is really prone to be affected by vegetation.

Rotten base of the wall

Maintain a level of the ground: The siding and structure of the house are affected by the moisture from the ground as well as by the splash from the rain hitting your ground. The BC Housing Design and Construction Standards recommend: ” Do not install siding less than 150 mm (6”) from any previous surface of the ground or loose fill grade nor closer than 50 mm (2”) to roofs, patios, porches, decks and other solid surfaces where water may collect.”

Clean your siding regularly: Dirt, grime, and debris can accumulate on your siding and cause damage over time. Use a soft-bristled brush or a pressure washer to clean your siding at least once a year. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning tools that can damage the surface of your siding.

Inspect your siding regularly: Inspect your siding at least once a year for signs of damage, such as cracks, holes, or warping. Repair any damage as soon as possible to prevent it from getting worse. The best time for the observation is early spring as you can manage your potential repairs before the winter comes again.

Rotten fascia and soffit

Keep your gutters clean: Clogged drains and gutters can cause water to overflow onto your siding and cause damage. Do not forget that your fascia and soffit can be hurt badly by clogged gutters as well. Clean your gutters regularly to prevent this from happening.

Paint or stain your siding: This applies to any wood components applied at your house, including trims, barge boards, dentils, soffit, knee-braces… If it is painted or stained, make sure to reapply the paint or stain as needed to keep it protected from the elements.

Hire a professional siding contractor: If you’re not comfortable inspecting or maintaining your siding, hire a professional siding contractor to do it for you. They can help identify and repair any damage and suggest the next steps for better protection of your home.
